Recently a woman said after meeting one of the new priests this year:
"eternal pity that such an attractive, intelligent and likeable young man becomes a priest!" Maybe she thought: he would have been a good family man and maybe he could have taken an important leadership position in politics or economy.

Anselm grun gets to the heart of the matter:
"many people today think that being a christian makes you unfree, takes away all the beauty of life. But it is not like that. I know, for example, many helpers in the emergency chaplaincy service. I do not believe that it is fun for these people to visit accident sites in the late hours of the night and then to inform the relatives of the death of a loved one and to stand by them in the first shock. These people are doing this because the voice of christ in them is calling: "you are needed!" And calling them to the community.
It is now a question of pushing people towards what lies dormant in them, their life melody, possibly a call from god, but which is not allowed to grow, because quite a few people run away from this call and do not want to face it."
Spiritual vocations, however, can often only be awakened and mature if they are embedded in an atmosphere that affirms spiritual vocations in families and communities.
When congregations cultivate this communion with jesus christ, they also radiate something; then the joy of faith will appeal to others, make them curious and infect them, even with "resolute determination" to answer the call of god. Spiritual life is like a garden that blooms, grows and flourishes when it is tended and cared for.
When more women and men decide to follow jesus in a spiritual profession – and this is something to pray for – the church will shine again. Spiritual vocations are a potential source of strength for the church.
A wise woman recently said: you can’t make an omelet if you don’t have any eggs. Even the gospel cannot break through if the lord god does not find women and men as tools.
There is a lot to do, not only for priests! For example, pastoral and community workers, religious education teachers and social pedagogues have numerous opportunities for work.
Dear school leavers, before you leave for your self-experience trip to australia, why not try the free self-experience "praise night"? On the cathedral square in bamberg together with people of the same age or to take a look around at the heinrichsfest?
Deacon diethard nemmert is the archbishop’s commissioner for the call of spiritual vocations (deanery of kronach).
