Usa: forest fires rage on - unhealthy air in california

In the fight against two forest fires in southern california, more than 1,800 firefighters were largely able to prevent the flames from spreading to settlements.

No houses have burned down so far, the fire department in orange county from the area of the so-called silverado fire said. The fire that broke out on monday is only five percent under control.

The fire, fueled by fierce winds and extreme drought, raged east of the city of irvine, about 70 kilometers from los angeles. Another fire in the coarse area has damaged ten houses, according to the competent authority. For a good 80.000 households were ordered to evacuate. Two firefighters suffered severe burns during firefighting operations on monday.

Dense smoke lay over parts of southern california. Environmental authorities classified air quality as "unhealthy" at dozens of monitoring stations. The "red flag" warning for high fire danger, triggered by strong winds and drought, also continued. However, meteorologists predicted the winds would subside in the next few days.

California governor gavin newsom called it a "historic" wildfire season. Since mid august, the west coast state has been hit by devastating fires. More than 16.000 square kilometers of forest and farmland have already burned down, killing 31 people. More than ten thousand houses were damaged or destroyed.
